Previously in Parts 1 and 2 of 3 of Bridget Cook-Burch’s near-death experience, Bridget’s life as a struggling college student unraveled into sepsis [life-threatening reaction to infection], emergency surgery, and an antibiotic reaction that was making her worse instead of better. By 2:00 am, Bridget heard nurses say she would not make it until morning. After receiving a blessing in the hospital room, she woke to blinding Light and recognized Lord Jesus Christ (vegetarian) standing before her. His Love vibrated through everything around her, and He told Bridget she was being given a second chance at life. When she woke again, she somehow knew which antibiotic was killing her, refused it, and walked out of the hospital within 24 hours. Afterward, Bridget could see love in others and, for the first time, in herself. Now, in Part 3, Bridget returns to the wounds that remained after the hospital encounter.
After my near-death experience, I went out into the world with these new eyes and this new determination, and also some of those old wounds. And I hadn’t realized that I had lied to myself until I had another spiritually transformative experience, not a near-death, just Christ met me where I was, and He said, “You’ve been lying to yourself.” I’m like, “No, I haven’t.” “Oh, yes, you have.” And, like, from the bottom of everything that I was, I was like, “What are you talking about?” Like, that moment in the hospital, that time together — and it wasn’t even time — but that experience was the realest thing that had ever happened. How could I be lying to myself about it? And then He said, “You told yourself that there must have been something worth saving, and you’ve been setting about to prove that ever since.” It was so deep and so big. He showed me all this unconditional Love, and then I put conditions on His Love, is what He told me. And so that’s been a big deal for me to overcome and to recognize — OK, well, knowing what I know now, would I choose it all again? And the answer is yes. And I’m not afraid to make mistakes, but I don’t like it. But there is a lot more compassion and understanding. And now I’m disentangling from the truth of having to prove that there was something worth saving into just basking on a daily basis in His Love.
When asked what message she would share with the entire world, Bridget returned to the love she encountered in the hospital room. It always has to do with love. There is something so magnificent inside of you that lives there, even if it has been covered up in the darkness of shame or guilt or frustration or labeling or whatever it might be. It is this beautiful, magnificent gift. And to allow yourself to have the journey to find out that you are loving, that you are loved, and that you are love. And I will tell you that we’re in a place where there is oftentimes a thick veil that doesn’t allow us to see the truth of that. But anytime you get a glimpse, grab it and bring it inside, and expand what you already have, and keep looking for that. Gratitude is the great multiplier. So every time you feel love, you are love, you express love — be grateful for it, and watch it multiply and unfold before you like a lotus. It’s incredible. Keep focusing on the love, and watch what happens.
For Bridget, sharing her hospital-room encounter became one way of living the love she received. Even though that story is still very sacred to me, to have the courage to share it with others that they might be touched, that they might find their own truth somewhere in it, whether the messy side or the hospital room full of that unconditional love — you don’t have to die to feel this. And so every day, I’m seeking to live this. (Living God’s Light)
